How to safely remove contact lenses
Some people find that removing contact lenses is easier than putting them on. It certainly takes some getting used to. This article and video tutorial will show you how to remove contact lenses effectively and safely.
Before removing contact lenses, remember to always wash your hands thoroughly with soap to clean them from dirt, grease and any germs.
Then dry them with a lint-free towel or paper towel. Your hands must be dry so that you can grip the lens well.
If you use reusable lenses and have a different defect for each eye, we recommend that you remove your lenses in the same order every day to avoid mixing up the right and left lenses. Trimming your nails is also important. Too long ones can scratch or even tear the lens when putting it on or taking it off. However, if you prefer not to shorten your nails, you need to practice using your side fingertips.
Contact lenses are best removed while standing in front of the mirror.
To remove the lens, look up and carefully pull down the lower eyelid with the middle finger of your dominant hand. Slowly bring your hand's index finger close to your eye until you touch the bottom edge of the lens. Gently slide the lens down to the bottom of the eye. Squeeze the lens with your thumb and forefinger and remove it. With your other hand, you can pull up the upper eyelid to create more space to remove the lens.
Repeat this process for the other lens. Sometimes it helps to add a few lubricant drops to your eye before removing your contact lenses. If you have dry eyes after wearing contact lenses all day, it may be more difficult to remove them. Appropriate drops (check leaflet to see if specific lubricant drops are recommended for use on the lens), making it easier to remove your contact lenses.
After removing contact lenses from your eyes, throw away daily contact lenses in the bin, and clean reusable lenses, i.e. two-week or monthly ones, before putting them in the lens case. Remember to never allow the tip of the cleaning fluid bottle to touch anything as this may contaminate your lenses and eyes.
